There are more things wrong with our politics than we could list in a blog post (honestly, more like 100 blog posts). But one of them seems to be a constant source of annoyance for everyone — no matter who you do or don’t vote for. You’ve probably even said it out loud yourself: we’re all tired of choosing from ”‘the lesser of two evils.”

But it’s not supposed to be that way. And it hasn’t always been just Republicans vs. Democrats in America, although the party bosses definitely want you to think that.

We? The People?

American-style democracy is supposed to be about choosing who you want to have in office, not being forced to choose between two people you don’t want. Of course, it hasn’t worked that way in a generation.

Remember that our government gets its authority from us, “the people,” and not the other way around. According to our constitution, ultimately, we’re in charge.

How and why, then, do we keep ending up with the same awful choices over and over? The short answer: it’s because the people who run the two major entrenched political parties want it that way.

One Swampy Little Secret

There are a number of ways that the Republican and Democratic parties prevent newcomers from threatening their power. Eventually, we’ll unpack all of them for you, but right now, we’re focused on one wonky little phrase: Ballot Access.

“Ballot access” refers to the (intentionally) complex system of laws, regulations, and often outrageous fees the two major parties have set up in order to ward off new political alternatives. In other words, they make it next to impossible to participate in the process.

Oh, and those rules apply only to newcomers and new parties, which means existing political superpowers are just fine. Status: Protected. Otherwise, well… the deck is stacked against you.

At the end of the day, one of the only things Republicans and Democrats agree on is that the only two options you should ever have are… Republicans and Democrats.

Enter: Us.

We’re SAM — the Serve America Movement, and we’re building a new party, trying to unrig this system for everyone in America. And the only way to do that is to create a new party from the ground up and beat the political status quo at their own game.

But unlike the Republican and Democratic parties, we think having more choices at the voting booth is a good thing. So we’re going to repeal those laws and tear down the barriers they’ve put up so it’s easier for everyone who comes after us. Because competition is a good thing.

Want to know more? LIke when we become an official party with ballot access in your state? (Maybe even help us out?) Give us your email address and we’ll be in touch.

Americans have never sat back and accepted something we didn’t like without putting up a fight. That’s not who we are as a nation. But that seems to be precisely what we’re doing with modern politics.

Monster Maps: Why Your Vote Doesn’t Count

We’ve all either said it or heard it: “My vote doesn’t count.” The bad news is, for a majority of voters, that’s not far from the truth — especially when it comes to congressional races like the midterms coming up this November. The good news is, there are solutions.

SAM is building a new political party for a new majority. Our goal is to break the self-interested stranglehold of the two entrenched parties and give back power and voice over our future, and our country, to the people.

We can’t do it without you.
